ACCIDENT TO THE LADYBIRD.

DUJSEDIN. At nine o'clock on Friday night, wben the steamer Ladybird was lying alongside Eattray-streeet Wharf, it was discovered that the water was pouriug into the engine compartment rapidly, and had reached witliin IS inches of the engineroom floor. Steam was got up m the boiler of the donkey-engine. A telegram was sent through the railway department to the Chief Engineer, Avho was at fort Chalmers, and Captain Malcolm was at once sent fur. The Captam and Mr. Mills arrived with all speed. By half-past nine the donkey-engine was at work, but though it threw out large quanties ot water through the steam pump, it was found that the water was still gaining. By ten o'clock steam was got up m thu boilers. At twelve' o'clock the leak was much gaining upon them ; the water was down nearly to the skin. The leak is supposed to have been caused on the title going out, when she settled down upon a stone, which forced itself through one ot her plates. She had only come out ot dock yesterday morning. A great deal of cargo had been taktn m during the day, but, as the sluices fortuuately were dowu, the water was confined to the engine compartment. She will be placed m the dock and surveyed to-day.
