SYDNEY.
May 22. In the Legislative Council,/ Sir John Robertson moved the discharge from the Order Paper of the Parliamentary Powers and Privileges bill which was agreed to.—Mr. Cameron drew attention to the fact that the system of immigration was degenerating into a traffic m human beings, as people were being brought out who were only fit for metropolitan life and could not obtain employment. The following motion was agreed to : — ' * That there be laid upon the table of this House copies of all correspondence respecting the proposed or actual change m the amount payable to. the English postal authorities, out of the postages on outward Australian and New Zealand mails." Sir Henry Parkes read to the 1 House correspondence between himself and Sir Alfred Stephens, with reference to an alleged statement by the latter many years ago that he (Sir Henry Parkes) ought to be on Cockatoo Island Convict Station.. a The Chief Justice had no recollection of making such a statement. The Government have declined to commute the sentence of death passed on the two young.men found guilty of a ' capital offence at Bathurgt. -' At the Central Criminal Court attention was drawn to the fact thai between 500 and 600 convicts would shortly be released from New Caledonia.
