PATEA.

A very large meeting of Oarlyle residents was held to discuss native affairs, Mr. Shed wood m the chair. The following resolutions were unanimously carried : — " That this meeting is of opinion that m consequence of the present attitude of the Natives it is urgently necessary that the district should be immediately put m a state of defence, and that the Government be at once requested to forward a supply of arms and ammunition here to be issued to settlers when occasion required, and that the settlers of this meeting sign their names as being willing to form themselves into a corps for the local defence of Carlyle, and request to be armed and drilled at once." The settlers here are not all satisfied with the aspect of affairs, and should an outrage be committed near town, nothing could be done to assist, as very few possess arms. Similar meetings to the above are being held all through the district. ,
