AUCKLAND.
This Day. Rewi has been doing the rounds here for the last few days. On Saturday he visited the Bank of New Zealand, and witnessed the assaying process. He also visited the Hospital and Museum and Mount Eden Goal, where he inquired about the graves of the Maoris executed for the murder of the Rev. Volkner and Falloon. He addressed twenty Maori piisoners, and told them they were highly punished for breaking the law, and advised them to reform when liberated. In the evening he was entertainrd at the Club by the leading citizens. On Sunday night he attended St. Paul's Church, and was affected to tears by some parts of the service. He is a member of the Church of England. He visited the Government House yesterday and afterwai'ds went through Frazer and Tinne's iron foundary. At a meeting of the Chamber of Commerce yesterday, resolutions were passed deprecating the removal of the timber duties, and showing the injury it has done to the Auckland | trade. Mr. Dargaville stated that some 500 or 600 men were out of employment in consequence, and that a large number of ships were now laid up that hitherto had found a profitable trade in carrying timber. Mr. Holdship stated that he regarded the taking the tax off timber as the severest blow the Government could inflict upon Auckland.
