COMMERCIAL.

Dunedin, May 24. The commercial writer lor the Otago Daily Times reports as follows : — The week opened with a fair demand for goods, but towards its close business somewhat fell away again. We have few opportunities at present of reporting any sales beyond average trade parcels, as in these times purouases are only made from hand to mouth, and the spirit of speculation is dormant. Several lines that have long been selling at unreniunerative prices are now almost out of the market, importers having grown tired of bringing goods that had commonly to be sold at a loss. Hennessy's case brandy is not obtainable even at the price offered for it, 35s ; bulk is selling a little more freely at 9s Gd to 9s 9d. The scarcity of the leading brand in case causes business to be a little brisker than usual in those brands occupying a secondary position, and during the week sales of these have been passing at full rates. Whiskies, as usual at this season, are quitted freely at, Dunville's, 5s 6d to 6s ; Ulenury, 5s (5d to 5s 9d ; Ardbeg, 5s 9d to 6s; Longjohn's, 6s to 6s 3d. Ale is in good demand, and favorite brands find ready purchasers. We quote Tenneut's, 10s 9d to 11s ; M'Ewau's, 10s 9d ; Yoonger's, 10s 6d ; Bulldog, 11s to 11s 3d. Gui n ness's stout is in increased demand, and stocks are moderate ; a parcel of Burke's was placed during the week at 11s 6d and 7s 9d. Kerosene is in heavy Btock and difficult to move — prices vary with the different brands in the market.
