Yesterday morning, John Moon, recently convicted of rape on a child, and sentenced ta 10 years penal servitude, and receive two -floggings of thirty lashes each, underwent the first portion of his flogging. At the first stroke of the cat, the prisoner set up a piteous howl, and oried out for mercy throughout,the flogging. The operator formerly served in' the American army; ahd was with General Shermau during his celebrated march through Georgia/ Moon will receive his second flogging on June 16. A very destructive fire took place at Lawrence yesterday morning, originating m Messrs Meyer and Oo.'s premises. The insurances as far as is known are : — Meyers and Co,, Northern, £500 ; Liverpool arid London, £500 ; these two sums were on the stock, the building being the property of the Colonial Bank. Meyer and Co., estimate their loss at £1,800. D. Johnson was insured for £500, viz., m the Standard for. £300, 'and the Norwich for £200, both sums being on the building only. James Brolb was insured for £100 m the Norwich on building and stock, the Colonial Bank is insured for £400 m the New Zealand Company.
