OUR ORMOND LETTER.
[From our Special Correspondent.] The last week has been a melancholy one, owing to the death of one of our old and most respected residents m this district ; I allude to the death of Mr. Joseph Hamon, sen. I also have to record the death of Master Moylan, which took place very suddenly, having only been ill a few days. Sickness appears to be very prevalent amongst the juveniles ; many parents are complaining of the ill- health of their little ones. It is to be hoped I may report better news m my next. To enliven the pro: gramme of the week I may inform you that, not being able to obtain any amusement from Gisborne, we have resolved to procure one of our own, and one that might be well worthy of the Gisborneites' patronage, being quite a novelty m the Bay — I allude to Wednesday's entertainment. "The Magic Lantern." In spite of the inclement weather, no moon, the roads m a wretched state from the late heavy rains, eight o'clock showed an audience that well filled the Hall, consisting of both Europeans and Maories, and to judge from the applause at the views produced, consisting of Ancient History, English and foreign views, local scenes, photographs, &c. , combined with some of the most comic scenes imaginable, which caused deafening laughter, proving the audience were well satisfied with their two shillings' worth. I am informed that as soon as Luna favours us with more light the proprietor intends to give us another entertainment of greater length, accompanied with a good orchestra ; the entertainment to conclude witli a dance. This will be anxiously looked forward to. The late rains have done a wonderful deal of good, both to cultivation and grazing. I am happy to inform you that those who travel to and from Ormond by night will find the late cuttings a great improvement, Mr. Boland having finished one cutting, and making great progress m the second one. Business very dull. Money out of the question. I
