April 8. " News from the Cape 3tates that Col. Wood met and defeated the Zulus. '•'' The loss of life was very heavy. The BritUU. lost-4QQ,*.and .the. Zulus 3,000. An insurrection has broken out m the Transvaal, the Boers having resented Lord Chelmsford's ordering them to active service. Sir Bartle Frere proceeded to Frefcova to pacify the Boers, and they invested the town and declared they would hold Sir Bartle prisoner until the British Government redresses their grievances. News from Cape Town of April Bth states that Lord Chelmsford's camp at Gingolara was repeatedly attacked by 11,000 Zulus at daybreak on the 3rd*, and repulsed with heavy loss to the Zulus. Lord Chelmsford relieved Ekowe on the night of the 4th. The total British loss was 220. After relieving Ekowe Lord Chelmsford returns to Zurgelova, and abandons Ekowe as a military position, and forms a retrenched camp between Zugela and Port Durnford.
