COUNTY TENDERS.
To the Editor of the Evening Hkuald. Sir, — Can you inform me what object ; the County Council can have in view by putting prohibitive restriction upon contractors by demanding 5 per cent, deposits v:ith tenders, when the Government and other Councils required but 2\ per cent, on the amount of tender, also making advances on materials, and pay 90 per cent, on work doue ; whereas our Cook County Council make no advance on materials, and pay but 75 per cent, on works actually done. The County will pay dear for these restrictions, as Councillors will see to-night by the absence of sufficient competition in certain contracts. Is there a contractor in Gisborne who can afford to keep two or three hundred pounds laying in the bank ready to deposit with tenders 1 I say no ; then, 1 say, let Councillors read over the conditions their Engineer would impose upon contractors, and see whether any prudent person would tender under such conditions, except at such prices as the Council should set its face against. I am, &c., One Who "Won't Tender.
