WRECK OF THE P.S. GEELONG.
We regret to record that teleg-ams' ' were received in town oil Wednesday, ' stating that the above ste'ameiythb ■'-' . property of Mr. G. W. Biriney, of this ■ ■■ ' city, was wrecked on Monday, and* at •-? which two natives loßt their lives. The p. s. Geelbng was an iron steamer of 90 ' ' horse-power and 108 tons register, .commanded by Captain Edward Keane, and engaged in towing timber from Whangape ; to: Hokiang% and it must, . ; have been in the performance of siicli operations the catastrophe occurred. The crew, it will be seen from the telegram, were saved, bu^ the death of two natives i3 recorded, and whether they were passengers, or engaged in attempting to save Tife^ it- is impossible t6 : say until further information is to , hand. The vessel was i nsured lor £1000, / but is valued at much mdre, v having' *• undergone considerable alterations and , improvements within the last few months. The following is a copy of the ' telegram : — " The . ,p.s. Geelong is a total wreck on t'ne inner bank' at the soath-west entrance to Whangape ■■"' ■,'. Heaps.
