LOCAL AND GENERAL.

I This morningpeople, resident or happening ! to be m the vicinity of the lower end. of Gladstone Road were greatly alarmed at what they conceived to be a violent earthquake shock. The office of this paper was greatly shaken, and thick dust clouds rose m volumes from the floors of the building. On the hands rushing to the front' door : they were: terror struck oa observing} so 'great' had been ilte-' shock, that a large portiou of the heavy solid brick work of the Bank of New Zealand had given way and had fallen to the ground. As many men were employed on the building engaged m taking down the brick work, a rush was made to ascertain whether any fatal accident had occurred, for it was not thought possible that ' all could have escaped. The enquiry led to an explanation which at" once relieved the mind of many anxious" persons. It was speedily learned that there had been no earthquake. That the overseer who superintended the pulling down of the brick work of the Bank had passed a stout rope round a large portion of the brick wall, and putting a strain on it many thousands of bricks came down "lumpus" with a tremendous crash ; aud this crash was the supposed earthquake.
