From a remote district m New Zealand (says a writer m the Australasian) there cometh to me a wail and a proposal. There are, says my correspondent, a few thousand people (m New Zealand) who would have greatly liked an invitation, on the usual terms of transport, to the Embassy banquet, and who exclaim with Mr. Patterson, " Why should we be deprived ?" &c. These thousands greatly admire the noble career of Mr. Berry They are, fortunately, forgiving persons. They will pardon the previous oversight if arrangements are made for their free passage to Melbourne (return tickets) to welcome Mr. B. at a fish dinner on his reappearance. ' ' I assure you, " says my correspondent, " that fully 6000 tickets will go off easily." There is, however, something suspicious m the postscript — " Let the affair," it is suggested, " come off m the Cup week !"
