Poetry Bay Heral AND East Coast News Letter. PUBLISHED EVERY EVENING. SATURDAY, MARCH 8, 1879.

"We have now arrived at a decided conclusion that the settlement of Poverty Bay is attracting attention, not only from- mere outsiders, but from the Government at Wellington. From outsiders there are capitalists prepared to invest large sums of money on. Native Lands immediately native titles are extinguished in favor of Crown Grants ; and the Government, as a proof of its desire to open up country in our districts, has officially authorised Captain Porter, who, for some time, was Land Purchase Commissioner, to undertake the completion of all outstanding purchases in the district. This assuredly is a step in the right direction, as the Government interests are considerable, and will probably represent the sum exceeding one hundred thousand pounds. We need scarcely say what a spurt it will give to trade ; what fading hopes it will resuscitate by the material benefits which must follow in the local circulation of so much money ; but it is not so much the money expenditure by the Government, as the opening up of so many square miles of new country, most of which is of the finest description, and will be most eagerly sought for by those who have the earth hunger upon them.
