LOCAL AND GENERAL.
Owing to a pressure upon our leading and advertising columns we have been compelled to hold over much local and general matter.
Another horse accident occurred this morning, by which a Maori, m his mad career, about a mile on the Ormond side of Makaraka, caused his horse to strike the wheel of a full-laden bullock dray. The horse dropped with a shattered shoulder. The Maori, who was the worse for liquor, escaped uninjured, and threatens to claim compensation from the dray owner, the driver of which, by the way, was on the proper side of the road, and was m front of the Maori who rode against the dray. We hope the Maori will get all the compensation he deserves ; and this should be a few weeks m gaol, with hard labor, and short commons. Mr. J. Villers Chairman of the Ormond District Highway Board, has given a final public notice that all rates not paid by the 31st inst. wdll be handed over to a solicitor. Defaulting ratepayers will know what that means. The pre-eminence of Wheeler and Wilson's Sewdng Machine over all others is now indisputable, whatever rival claimants may urge to the contrary. This fact should become patent to every household m New Zealand, so that they may, m purchasing an article which is unquestionably indispensable, be directed iv their choice by the judgment of the highest competent author ity. The only grand prize awarded to Sewing Machines at the Paris Exhibition, where there were over 80 competitors, was . gained by the Wheeler and Wilson's Manufacturing Company for their new straight needle machine with loose winding wheels, which is most perfect m mechanism, and possesses more improvements thau any other machine. Messrs. Graham and Co. have been appointed sole agents m Gisborne for the Company, and respectfully invite inspection of a number which have lately arrived. The regular monthly meeting of the Turanganui Lcdga will be held m the Freemasons' Hall on Monday next. The sale by Bourke & Fryer of the estate of the late A. C. Harrison, announced for 2 p.m. to-day, has been postponed till - - - i mn
The adjourned meeting of the Borough Council will be held iv the Council Chambers, this evening. There will be a meeting of the County Council to-morrow evening at the Council Chambers, at half-past seven. There will be business of importance. The sale re Bidgood, under distress warrant, which was to have been held tomorrow, by Messrs. Bourke & Fryer, has been withdrawn. The Otago Daily Times contains the following advertisement : — " Wanted, a Boy of Nerve for New Zealand Blonclin to carry on the High Rope at the Races. Apply Robert Burns Hotel, George street." If the New Zealand Blondin will give us authority, we will undertake to find him a dozen boys of Gisborne growth, who will not only have nerve enough to allow the Colonial Blondin to carry them ; but that any one of the dozen will be ready on the instant with an offer to carry the Colonial Blondin if he has nerve enough to let it be tried. This would show more pluck than ever the original Blondin exhibited.
