We understand says the Daily Neivs that an Ordinance will shortly be sent out from Home for adoption by the Legislative Councils m Crown Colonies, providing that European prisoners sentenced to penal servitude may be sent Home to undergo their sentences m one of the penal establishments m England. Dartmoor would probably be the gaol chosen, and an Act of Parliament is being prepared to enable the Crown Colonies to adopt this course of dealing with their European criminals.
His Honour the Chief Justice, m passing sentence on James Allen Mackie for forgery and larceny at Wellington recently, said: — "Though I must not consider the inadequacy of your salary as an excuse, I may remark that there is a tendency at the present day, not only m banks but m other business to pay those m a position of trust too lightly. It is supposed that a person may be safely entrusted with money though he has not been m the habit of handling it. I apprehend that this is a false idea, for it is just as necessary to have a man experienced m the resistance of temptation as a man experienced m plastering walls."
