TE AWANUI.
(from our own correspondent.) A sitting of the Resident Magistrate's Court was held here on the 23rd ultimo. Captain Gudgeon was the presiding Magistrate. The following cases were desposed of :— Police v. Hariwa, for sly grog selling. Maki was also charged with the same offence. Both pleaded guilty. The Bench took a lenient view of the matter, and fined each £1 and 40s costs, to be paid in one month, in the event of non-payment, summary proceedings to be taken. Hirini Raha was charged with assaulting a half-caste girl, named Marie Sturley, at the Kawa Kawa, on Ist January. Defendant failed in making an appearance, and on proof of summons being served, he was fined the Buni of £5, and 18s costs, or in default two months imprisonment. Allowed one month to pay the fine. The location of the police in the district, has had the desired effect. Sergeant McGuire has been most indefatigable in endeavoring to suppress the sale of spirits by those unlicensed. He seems to have gained the good opinion of the Natives, and the Rangatiras in the district have promised to give him every assistance in the execution of his duty.
