ANNIVERSARY OE THE PROVINCE.
[To the Editor of the Evening Herald.] Sir, — In your issue of yesterday, a local enquires what anniversary the 29th January commemorates 1 Will you permit me to put you m possession of the solution : — On the 29 January, 1840, Captain Hobson landed on Kororareka beach, from H.M.S. Rattlesnake, and was sworn m as Lieutenant Governor of New Zealand, and afterwards, I think, m 1842, was gazetted as Governor of New Zealand, then becoming a colony, and not a dependency of New South Wales.— l am, &c, 1840.
