BOROUGH COUNCIL.

A meeting of the Borough Council was held last night m the Council Chamber—His Worship the Mayor and a full Council being present. Mr. Daniel Page was introduced to the Mayor and members when, having made the usual declaration, he took his seat by the side of Cr. Walker, as one of the Councillors for the Borough of Gisborne. After the usual preliminary business of reading and confirming the minutes of a previous meeting the acting-clerk read the report of the Borough Engineer. It stated that Mr. Williams' contract for Reads-Quay and other streets was being proceeded with, and that 327 cubic yards of gravel had been delivered. The contractor had asked for an extension of time, which the Engineer recommended should be allowed. The construction of the Punt for the Turanganui River was being proceeded with. As complaints had been made of defective material being employed m its construction, the Engineer suggested that the members of the Public Works Committee should inspect the punt. The Harbor Master had prohibited' the removal of all metal from above high water mark. The Engineer proceeds to Bay— "l purposed utilising this stone for the approaches to the punt, and m the event of not being able to get possession of the metal, I shall have to facine between high and low water mark at an extra expense of about £20." THE WAIMATA EIVBR. The Engineer reported that he had made a survey !bf «.the Walnut* River with a view to a Water supply * The levels taken from the door steps of the Court House to where the tide-flow ceases, shows a fall of eight feet, and from this point, for about' two and a» half miles, shows a rise of four feet, being a distance of about six miles from the township. No available sites for Reservoirs are to be obtained on the river or its tributaries. The Engineer would recommend the carrying out of Councillor Townley's scheme. He would suggest the construction of a Weir or Reservoir, as proposed, and either construct a high-level reservoir on the adjacent spur, or lead the water into the town or the level of the weir, and construct a small reservoir and, erect puinping gear, .such as a small hydraulic ram for the purpose of raising the Water to the necessary height. At a rough estimate, the Engineer is of opinion, that the whole works could be contracted forkabout £4000. M No business was transacted, as the * Oounoil adjourned to allow the Mayor to preside at Captain Morris's meeting. The Council will resume its sitting this evening. .
