[from ottr special correspondent.] Lyttelton, January 21. Arrived, Shaw, Saville Company's barque Bebington, 101 days from London, with three cabin passengers, eight second, and 21 steerage, all well. She touched at Triston D'Acunha on December 7, and reports all the inhabitants there well, some one ill of dropsy. On New Year's Day the steering gear got adrift, and the ship broached to shipping a sea that stove m her starboard bulwarks. The ship Soukar, from Canterbury, was spoken on November 19 on the Equator. Dunedin, January 20. A pawnbroker m George-street was complimented at the Police Court yesterday by the Bench and the Inspector of Police for his promptness m bringing before the Court two men charged with stealing several pairs of boots. The robbery had been reported to the pawnbrokers m the usual way, and when one of the men offered the boots m pledge he was detained m the shop till police arrived. In the Supreme Court yesterday, Mr. Denniston complained of the unfairness of a report which appeared m the Evening Age of the case before the Court. His Honor said that he did not wish to comment on newßprper reports, and said counsel should take the usual steps if he wished to have the offending journal punished. The district schools opened yesterday. One hundred children were refused admission, m some instances m consequence of want of accommodation. It is stated that there are one thousand children m Dunedin for whom no facilities offer for their education. New Plymouth, January 20. The Harbor Board committee on the charges made by Mr. Irvine, the engineer, against Messrs Kelly and Weston, members of the board, report that the conduct of Messrs Kelly and Weston was not improper, and that having made such grave charges through a solicitor without foundation and declined to withdraw them, it is inadvisable that Mr. Irvine should remain m the services of the board after the 18th of February. The Waiwakailio Bridge was set fire to to-day by a spark from the engine of a train setting fire to the grass m the neighborhood. There was no damage done. The railway contractors offer 12s a day for plated layers without response. All complain of the scarcity of labor impeding public works.
Wellington, January 20. It is proposed to give the Governor a banquet prior to his departure from Wellington. The Loan and Investment Company propose to pay 7£ per cent, dividend, which, with the interim dividend already paid, will make 12£ per cent, for the year. A meeting of the committee of the New Zealand Rifle Association to-night fixed the date of the firing at Nelson for Monday, the 3rd of March. Subscriptions received after the 18th February will not be taken into consideration m fixing prizes. A fire occurred this morning m Courtney Place, but it was confined to a bakeJiouse. The damage done was blight. The premises are insured m the New Zealand for £150. The fire ia supposed to have been caused by a candle left lighted falling against some woodwork. In two actions against the Tramway Company for damages to vehicles by collision the Magistrate gave judgment for £10 and costs. The news of the death m Ohristcliurch of H. M. Moor, late manager of the New Zealander, has caused general regret. The Underwriters Association report, under date, London, January 17th, the arrival of the Chasca from Wellington, Waimati from Lyttleton, and Arkshaw from Oamaru. In two cases for recovery of damages against the Tramway Company for injuries to vehicles, the Resident Magistrate reserved judgement, but yesterday afternoon gave a verdict for £10 and costs agrinst the Company m each case. Edgar Bastings for alleged forgery was brought up and remanded to Christchurch. The Agent-General advises the sailing of the ship Hudson from Plymouth on 21st November, with 207 immigrants, for Wellington^ and 39 for Hawke's Bay. Of these 73 are English, 41 Scotch, 73 Irish, and the remainder from the Channel Islands and other places. Also the Warwick from Plymouth on the 30th November with over two hundred Immigrants, the greater number of whom are thought to be nominated, owing to there being destined to so many parts of the colony, 77 for Wellington, 53 for Canterbury, 23 for Auckland, 16 for Westland, 12 for Marlborough, 9 for Nelson, 8 for Taranaki, 2 for Napier and 1 for Dunedin. The young lad Bacon, who stole a bundle of notes, £265, from the Anchor Line Office, was brought up before the Resident Magistrate this morning and fully committed for trial at the next criminal sessions. Bail was allowed, the boy's father m £200, and two sureties m £100 each. GraiUlMstown, January 21. The Colonial Government steamer Stella was to arrive last evening with the Hon. Mr Sheehan, who has to transact business with the natives, left unfinished last week. The Auckland Harbor Board's steam dredge was towed here yesterday by the s.s. Rotomahana to dd dredging work m this harbor for the local Board, the latter paying all expenses and a bonus for the use of the dredge. The Government are to blame for ever sending out of the colony for sleepers, when they can be obtained here m any quantity of puriri and rata, if notification were given of the want. The fact is the Government go away from likely dis* tricts to unlikely ones with their wants* The same remarks apply to contracts, because there is plenty of skilled labour here open to take up contracts. The opening of the railway works is much sought after to afford employment to numbers. Auckland, January 21. Mr Buckland's sheep fair was held yesterday, and there was a meagre attendance compared with last year's entries. It is contended that the low price of wool is the cause of the present general disinclination to invest m sheep. The quality of sheep penned, although small, is first class. The twotooth Lincoln imported by Mr Graham brought from 15s to 18s each, and Lincoln hoggetts 18s
