WEIGHING OUT.
To the Editor of the Evening Herald. Sib, — I beg, through the medium of your columns, to call the attention of racing men and the public generally to the unsatisfactory manner in which what is called " weighing out " the jockeys is conducted. For instance, A.'s horse, in a weight for age race has to carry, say, 9st. ; but A. declares to carry 9st. 81bs., or, may be, lOst. Again, in a handicap race, B.'s horse has to carry say Bst., and B. declares to carry Bst. lOlbs. If either A. or B.'s horses are "pulled" in the race, they are liable to be disqualified, or, if either of them "scratch" his horse at the post, he will be pretty heartily abused for his unsportsmanlike conduct ; but there is not, as matters stand at present, any rule against either of. them declaring to carry any amount of weight over the proper quantity, which proceeding I look upon as about equal in unfairness to "pulling," or "scratching," whether the horse wins or not. In order to remedy this glaring inconsistency in racing, I suggest that no horse be allowed to start with more than 21bs declared over weight. — I am, &c, 0. Bouspield.
