Sirs. F. S. Tarrant, Hawcra, was a visitor to Ka.karamea on Wednesday, when she was the guest of Mrs. G. Meharry.

“On the day this offence was committed accused obtained a divorce from his wife, and in the natural exuberance of his release had too much to drink.” This was the rather novel excuse given by counsel in the Magistrate’s Court at Christchurch for a young man who appeared for sentence on a charge of theft.
Twelve Canadian couples arc engaged to be married following a leap year dance organised 'by a women’s Conservative association in Toronto, The couples became engaged in the course of a dance during which the girls were authorised to propose. After the dance, the couples advanced toward the stage. Prizes were presented to the betrothed couples by Mr. Wilfred Hcighington, Conservative member of the Ontario Legislature. He was outwardly calm until he spied his secretary in the linc-up.
To have had no meat for over five months is the experience of one Stratford family where the breadwinner earns 25s a week for two days' work. The meals comprise porridge and vegetables, especially potatoes and beans. Speaking to the ‘Post' the man in question said they had dispensed with meat, as it was too costly an item, and they were quite satisfied with their present fare. He could earn a few shillings more on relief work, but preferred to remain in his present job so long as it lasted.
NURMI TO MARRY.
Paavo Nurmi, the famous Finnish long-distance runner, who holds six listed world's records, announced on April 12 that he soon will marry Mrs. Sylvi Laaksonen, of Abo. • Banns for the wedding were published for the first time on April 12. Nurmi, 34, is under temporary suspension by the International Amateur Athletic Federation, pending investigations of his amateur status.
WHEN TWEED IS SHABBY.
When a turned coat or suit has become shiny with w r car, rub it w T cll with a cloth (preferably a piece of the tweed) dipped in writer to which liquid ammonia and saltpetre have been added in the proportions of a tablespoonful of ammonia and half a tcaspoonful of saltpetre to a quart of water. After sponging all over, press the material on the wrong side with a moderately hot iron, placing a piece of muslin betw r cen the tweed and the iron.
LAVENDER KEEPS MOTHS AWAY
Lavender bags placed among woollies in boxes will keep moths away, as they dislike the smell of lavender. Bo sure, however, to use plenty of lavender. The scent given to clothing and blankets, etc., is so delightful that they can be used direct after storing.
THE OPTIMIST'S PRAYER.
Grant that I may be a true, loyal friend, a genial companion with the broad honest charity born of an intimate knowledge of my own shortcomings. COCKLES.
Ingredients: .Weight of 2 eggs in butter, flour, and cornflour, 1 teaspoon baking powder. Method: Cream butter and sugar, add eggs, then flour, and cornflour. Bake in toaspoonfuls on very hot oven slide. Stick together with jam or lemon cheese.
CREAM CHEESE
Ingredients: 2oz butter, 2oz old cheese, 1 egg, cayenne and salt, 1 teaspoon milk. Method: Grate cheese and mix all together. Boil in double sapeepan till thick. Stir continual!} until well blended. Cook for a few mi utes only.

Lamlladv: “And how do you feel now?” Lodger: “Rotten, I feel as though I were going to die.” Landlady; “Well yon can't do it hero, this is the living room.”
