WARDER ATTACKED
PRISONER USES SHOVEL,
PUT ON BREAD AND WATER
Lawrence Dryden, a prisoner at Pap'arua, was convicted by Mr. E. D. Mosley, S.M., at Christchurch of a prison offence and sentenced to seven days’ bread and water. The evidence showed that after being reprimanded!, Dryden became abusive, and picked up a shovel and struck a warder viciously on the arm. lie then bolted, but was recaptured later. The superintendent of the prison saidthe attack on the officer was particularly vicious, as Dryden attempted to slash him on the head, the blows being warded off by the officer’s arm and hand. As it was, the officer was severely bruised.
