GRANTS CANCELLED

AUTHORITIES FOR ROADS. SHOCK FOR COUNTIES. A telegram in the nature of a bombshell has been received from the Minister of Public Works by county councils. It states that the Government’s financial position necessitates a review of all road authorities held by local bodies, and all such authorities have been cancelled as from March 4. Where contracts have been let or definite commitments made, the Government -will consider issuing fresh authorities for those works only. It is stated in Auckland that the decision will not affect main highways maintenance authorities.
