LAWN TENNIS

RESIDENTIAL CHAMPIONSHIPS. HELD AT PATEA. The South Taranaki residential championships were commenced at Patea on Saturday in perfect weather, a largo number of visitors being present to watch the matches, which in nearly every case were evenly contested and full of interest. The president of the Patea Club, Mr. A. C. Thompson, made reference to the loss the club was sustaining in the departure of Mr. S. L. E. Torrens for Inglewood. During the 7 years Mr. Torrens had been in Patea he had taken a very great interest in the club, and had been one of its outstanding players. He was the present holder of the South Taranaki singles championship, and had done excellent work as a member of the South Taranaki executive. Patea’s loss would be Inglewood’s gain, and on behalf of his fellow members he wished Mr. and Mrs. Torrens all prosperity and happiness in the future. He then called upon Mrs. Thompson to present Mr. Torrens with a xylonite clock as a small token of their esteem, Mrs. Thompson doing so amid applause. Mr. Torrens, in returning thanks*, said anything he had done had been for the love of the game, and had been a pleasure. In a country club members had to do a great deal of work that was not required of members of a city club, and this helped to make them appreciate their tennis. He was truly sorry to be leaving the club, and wished members success in the future. He was sorry Mrs. Torrens was unable to be present, owing to various home duties in connection with their departure. They would greatly prize the gift, which would remind them of the

many happy days spent on the Patea tennis courts.
