PERSONAL

•Mr. and Mrs. Ophir Tristram, -who have been the guests of Mr. and Mis. F. Locker, have returned to Otorohanga. Mr. L, Torrens was the guest of honour at a complimentary smoke concert which was tendered him in the supper room of the Druids' Hall on Thursday by his associates in the various banks and others friends. Complimentary speeches wore made by Mr. A. i\ Christensen, chairman of the Patea Harbour Board, Mr. A. C. Thompson, manager of the Bank of New Zealand, Mr. H. A. Findlay, manager of the Bank of Australasia, Mr. C. Beauchamp, accountant, Bank of New Zealand, Mr. L. F. Row', county engineer, Mr. L. W. Austin, Town Clerk, and Mr. E. W. Hamerton, secretary, Whenuakura Dairy Factory. Mr. Christensen; on behalf of those present, presented Mr. Torrens with a very fine golf bag and wished him every success in the future. In making the presentation, Mr. Christensen said that Mi. Torrens had made a host of friends during the seven years he had been in Patea. By his unfailing courtesy and tact and his genial personality he had earned for himself a warm place in the hearts of them all, and he felt sure that one one’s departure from the town would be more generally regretted. His friends -were, however, gratified at his .promotion, and hoped that before long they would hear of his having climbed further up the ladder of success. Mr. Torrens, in

thanking the various speakers for their kind remarks, said he had had a very happy time during his stay in Patca, and was truly sorry to leave. He had made a host of friends, from whom he had received nothing but kindness, and he would always have the most pleasant recollections of his stay in the town. He thanked them for their very handsome present, which would serve to remind him of the happy houis he had spent with them on the local links. During the evening songs were rendered by Messrs. Langslow and J. Shcahan, and were heartily appreciated. Mr. Torrens leaves for Inglewood tomorrow.
