BRAVE RESCUE ATTEMPT
tm-YEAR-OLD MAN DROWNED. FALL FROM LOCKS WHILE FISHING. About I o’clock on Saturday afternoon, Francis Irwin, aged do, who had joined Ins sons and family from Hamilton for a holiday at Mount Maunganui, Tauranga, fell from the rocks while fishing at the Blow Hole on Motuniki Island. There was some delay in getting the reels across the precipitous track. Aubrey Courtenay ran akbad, dived in, and caught hold of Irwin. When the reseat' party arrived they found Irwin and Courtenay some 200 yards from the shore. Irwin was un•onsciouy, and Courtenay was almost exhausted lighting with the tide rip. Douglas Kimber went out with a lifeline and relieved Courtenay of the burden. All three were then drawn ashore, Kimber being badly bruised on the rocks. Resuscitation on Irwin, in which Nurst.-i Brookes and Monas and Miss Herd took part, was tried for two hours, when Dr. Rancloll pronounced bfe extinct. Mr. Irwin leaves four sons and two daughters. He resided •it Auckland for 50 rears.
