INCREASE IX ALL CHARGES. FROM MARCH 1. The new postal and telegraph charges have been, announced,. Briefly the charges arc: Letters, l’d instead of Id. J’ostcards, Id instead of El. Late fee. L’d instead of Id. Backets, Id for each loz instead of El for each L’oz up to L’lb and L’d lb thereafter. Xewspapers. id for each Soz, instead of El per copy. Registration fee, Id instead of fid. Parcels, lid lb for first Mb and 3d lb thereafter up to 111 b. Fragile fees of (id and !)d on parcels are doubled. Telegrams are increased to a penny a word with a minimum of Is with urgent telegrams at double that rate. Xight letter telegrams will bo charged Is for 21 words. Radio telegrams will be increased from 3d to lOd a word to fld and lid. The press rate of Is (id per KM words will remain, but a limit of flflOO words will be imposed on Press messages for morning papers lodged after 3 p.m. For evening papers (he limit after 3 p.m. is (ixed at 1000 words. Words in excess of those maxima are being charged for at the rate of El each. The "Minister explained that (he new rates were being introduced at short notice, on March 1, in order to give the Governmttnl the much needed additional revenue for one month of this financial vear as a set-off to some extent to the extraordinary expenditure and serious loss of revenue in Hawke’s Bay as a result of the earthfjunke.
