KNOX CHURCH

COBWEB FAIR. The annual Cobweb hair in connection with the Presbyterian Church was hold on Friday in the Foresters’ Hall, the function being opened at 2 p.m. by His Worship the Mayor, who in a brief speech congratulated the committee on the excellent supply of good things offered for sale. His Worship remarked that he had heard all sorts of titles given to bazaars and sales of work, but he had never before heard one called a Cobweb Fair. Still, he thought it very appropriate, as they desired to draw all they could into the web, but not to be like the spiders and consume their victims, as they looked forward to having them with them again, next year. The hall, though not so commodious as tho Town Hall, which had been used in previous years, was ample for the purpose, and ho hoped that the. abundance of good things be saw on the stalls would bo disposed of before night, when he trusted they would be well and truly satisfied with the day’s work. He had much pleasure in declaring the fair open. (Applause.)

Good business was done throughout the afternoon, the greater portion of the good things being sold before night. The following wore the stallholders: —■ Produce: Mesdamos Pauling and Lund. Cakes and Bread: Mesdamos Bradford and Smaill. Sweets: Misses Boagey and McCarty. Afternoon Tea: Ladies’ Guild members under Mrs. Naismith. Sewing:. Mesdamos Pickards and Ralsillle. Plants and Flowers: Mrs. Haswell and Miss F. Hemingway. Blaring the evening the following items were rendered to an appreciative audience; —Mrs. G. W. Corbett, song; Master L. Pauling, recitation; Mrs. W. G. P. Inglcy. song; and Master S. Pauling, song. Community singing under the leadership of Mr. I*. Naismith, also added to the enjoyment. An auction by Mr. Naismith of the surplus goods on the stalls was held later in the evening, everything beingdisposed of satisfactorily.
