THE PORT OF PATEA.
To the Editor. yir,—On reading' your report of the lust meeting' of the Harbour Board 1 was rather surprised not to sec some reference to the state of the entrance to the river, if this matter was discussed, it was evidently taken in committee, but if so, why not let the ratepayers know the results of the deliberations, whether something is going to be done, or whether the whole matter is to be treated with contempt? On Thursday last there was another demonstration between the walls, fortunately without serious damage, but how long will this good luck last? The annual overhaul of the dredge was completed some time ago, but it is still tied up to the wharf. Why lias it not been down between the walls, at least trying to make a channel? The only additional cost would be the eotil, as the board still employs the full gang, so that it cannot bo for lack of funds. Although there have been days when it would not bo safe to work, there have also been days when the weather has been ideal. Maybe at the next mooting something may bo done, or the matter at least . discussed, so that the ratepayers may know whether any attempt is going to be made to improve the entrance, or whether they will have the privilege of paying rates as ti compensation for seeing the port closed altogether. —I am, etc., RATEPAYER.
