VALUABLE CALVES DESTROYED
The danger of sending to slaughter many of the Dominion’s most valuable calves was voiced by Air. C. AT. Hume, genera) manager of the New Zealand Herd Testing Association, at the annual meeting at Hamilton. While, he said, the bobby ealf scheme was the best yel For disposing oF the calves of poor producers, unfortunately it was responsible also for getting rid of many valuable calves that should come into the dairy industry. Mr, Hume considered if rare were not exercised in selecting animals for the bobby calf trade the dairy industry in a few years would experience a serious shortage of good calves. He counselled breeders who had caljycs coming forward that they would do well to hold on to them for several days after birth, when he felt sure that instead of receiving 7s or Ss offered by the bobby calves- trade they would receive 15s or £1 each for the animals.
