ABPRECIATI VE HUFEE UNCES. At the valedictory social tendered 'ey the members of the Patou Municipal Band held on Tuesday, complimentary reverences wore made by more than one speaker to the present state of tin town. In proposing the toast of the Borough Council, Mr_ Hemingway eulogised tin work of His Worship the Mayor and. councillors, and stressed the point that the town had many natural advantages which he thought would be rocogniseii by the outside world in the near future to the advancement of the town. (Applause.) His Worship said it was rather cmharassing to him to have to reply to the very kind remarks made by Mr. Hemingway. The council was always a fair target for the people to hurl bricks at. In the words of the poet, “the evil that men do lives after them;' the good is oft interred with their bones.” It was very pleasing to hear a person of Mr. Hemingway's experience in municipal matters bear such high testimony to their efforts. Ho often heard outsiders say that Patea v. as heavily rated, but when he told them the rates that were actually paid they were astonished that they were so low. He was pleased to think that during the seven years he had been in Patea he had always found people, willing to help) in any efforts lie had pmt forward on behalf of the town. Ho had never regretted any work he had undertaken. With regard to the band, the council had not been able to do all it would have wished for the band, but they knew that if the council gave the money to ono thing it would not he available for another thing of perhaps greater necessity'. 'The ’council was always ready to help local bodies who were doing their best for the town. Mr. Hemingway, had to take credit for a great deal of the advancement of the town. They had only to look at the Domain Board to sec what ho and his colleagues hud been able to accomplish. Remarks were continually being pvassed by motorists froM tbe North Cape to the Bluff extolling the beauties of the Domain. There was one thing they must aim 'at aipi that was to encourage the people to come to the town 2nd spend their loose cash in the town, so as to make up for the cash expended by- local residents when 'away* on holiday. This was what the Domain Board had in mind, whAi they improved the Domain and encouraged the tourist traffic. The Borough Council had done its level best and be was glad to think that their efforts were appreciated as Mr. Hemingway- had said. (Appilauso.) Councillor Hamsbottom said His Worship 'and Mr. Hemingway had said a great deal in praise of the town. Under the Mayor the council had been a very- happy- family-. Previously they had had many sct-hacks, notably when the electric light dam and power house was swept away. Now, under His Worship, they- had a great team, who worked unitedly on behalf of the town. The council was never better financially than it was at the present time. (Applause.)
