The first annual meeting of the Patea Girl Guides’ Association was hold in the Borough Council chambers at 7.30 p.m. on Tuesday, August 16, Mrs. P. S. Finlayson presiding. Mesdames C. Carey, K. Hunger, Naismith, Roekell, Harrc, Herbert, Masters, and Misses Gibson, HasWcll, Al. Hamcrton, Muiiicli Hamcrton:, Roberts, Beamish, and W. Homingwaj were also present. Apologies for non-at-tendance were received from Mesdames Sheild, Hamel, Scott, and Fairwcather. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. PREBIDENT’B REPORT. The report of the president (Mrs. P. B. Finlayson) was submitted as follows: — I have much pleasure in submitting this, the first annual report of the work of the Girl Guides and Brownies . in Patoa. As you are all aware a preliminary mooting to form a local association was held on February 22 last, at which Mrs. Houston (district commissioner), Mrs. Barbour (leader of the Haw ora Rangers), and a number of local ladies were present. As an outcome of the meeting the local troops of Guides and'Brownies were formed, Miss T. Gibson being appointed captain, Mrs. Masters and Miss Roberts lieutenants, and Mrs. Harrc and Miss Beamish brown and tawny owls, respectively. lam pleased to report that excellent work is being done under these officers. The thanks of the troop are due to Mrs. Hamel, who gave a very pleasant afternoon ait her residence, when the Brownies were enrolled by the district commissioner. Another parade which should foe recorded was on the occasion of the presentation of badges to the Boy Scouts by Scout Commissioner Horner, when Captain Gibson, Lieutenants Masters and Roberts, and over 30 Guides paraded in uniform, the Guides’ colour: party acting as colour party for the whole parade, arid being warmly complimented for the manner in which they acquitted themselves. The association is greatly indebted to Mrs. Barbour and those who assisted her in arrang- 1 ing and producing an excellent concert in the local Town Hall, in aid of the funds of the association, and also in the same connection thanks are due to Mrs. MacFarlanc, Miss Campbell, and Mr. L. Campbell for their assistance on that occasion. The thanks of the association are also due to the “Patea Press” for the liberal manner in which the association' has' been treated in regard to advertising and printing. In conclusion the committee hope very shortly to have arrangements ■completed, for .the formation of a local troop of Rangers (senior girls), and feel confident that the Girl Guide and Brownie, movements are now permanently established in Patea ;under competent officers, and will provide the girls of the district with- a means of association of benefit to themselves and others which hitherto has been lacking, CAPTAIN’S REPORT, The captain, Miss T. Gibson, reported as follows: — - * ' * Since our first enrolment on May 13 parades have been held regularly each Saturday, with the exception of August 6, when a holiday was given on account of the school basketball competitions. On July 27 wo 1%-d -a visit from our district commissioner, Mrs. Houston, for an investiture of five more recruits, f several of our executive and members of the association being present at the ceremony. We have now formed two more patrols, making eight in all, each consisting of live Guides under a leader and second. ’Keen interest is shown in the secondclass badge work, and as soon as the weather is more settled wc look forward to doing quite a lot of work out of doors. In spite of the -weather and the distances some of the Guides have to come, the attendances have been "very satisfactory; the weekly penny subscriptions total £2 16s 3d, and after purchasing the necessary books and materials for flags, etc., we still have a balance of £1 5s 6d in hand. BROWN OWL’S REPORT. The brown owl, Mrs. Harrc, reported us under: — Wince the formation of the Brownie puck in Patea a weekly pack 'meeting has been held. The building used for tliis purpose is very satisfactory, there being adequate space and. good ventilation. There are non- -i) Brownies nm-. rolled. The attendance has been well maintained, in spite, of the fact that (he weather during the past several mouths has been very bleak. Mrs. Houston visited the pack on July 3, and after examining the Brownies expressed herself very well pleased with .e progress of the pack. During her visit Mrs. Houston advised that another tawny owl or a pack leader be appointed to assist with this part of the movement. A pack leader is generally a second class Guide chosen from tho troop. A weekly subscription of Id has been collected. This, as yet, has not proved very satisfactory, as some Brownies bring their pennies regularly, while others negle*t to do so. Tho amount collected in this -way is 8s lOd. I would suggest that this be used for framing the Brownie certificate, which has been received from headquarters. In conclusion I would like to thank those who have helped in this work, especially Mrs. Finlaysou and Mrs. Hamel, who, on different occasions, gave us groat assistance. Tho annual balance-shoot, showing a. credit balance of £7 5s 8d cash in hand, with outstanding liabilities nil, was read.

The president, in moving the adoption of tho annual reports and balancesheet, said they showed that the Guide movement in Patea was in a most healthy condition. The Guidos ' and Brownies were doing (splendid work under their officers, the progress made by them during flic seven months since the inception of the movement locally being really remarkable. It wa's most encouraging, too, to find the association in such a good 'financial position, and she trusted the issuing year would mark still further progress in the Guido movement in Patea. The motion was seconded by Mrs. Hunger and carried unanimously. f ELECTION OF OFFICERS. The election of officers resulted as follows: - President; Mrs. P. S. Finlayson. Vice-presidents: Mesdames Simmons, Hamel, and Herbert. , < Executive: Mesdames Hunger, Naismithj. Rockcll,/Fraser, Roots; Pauling, Masters, and Misses B, and T. Gibson, Haswcll, Beamish, Amour, and Muriel Hamcrton. . Secretary and Treasurer: Miss W. Hemingway. Auditor: Air. F. T. Kay. Captain: Miss T. Gibson, Lieutenants: Airs. Masters and Misses D. Roberts and H. Shcild. Brown Owl: Mrs. Harre. Tawny Owl: Miss M. Beamish. GENERAL. Tho matter of appointing another tawny owl whs held over until the next meeting of the executive. The president bvougnt forward tho matter of forming a local Ranger company. Misses Marian Hamcrton and L. Hoswoll were willing to assist with tho formation of the company, and had already got in touch with 20 girls willing to join should a company be formed. She moved that a Ranger company be formed in Patea. The motion was seconded by Mrs. Naismith and carried unanimously. On the motion of Mrs. Alasters, seconded by Mrs. RockelJ, it was re-' solved that Miss Haswell the appointed senior and Atiss Hamcrton junior lieutenant in charge of same for a probationary period of three Months. The matter of arranging for the dedication of the company flag was left in the hands of the captain. On the motion, of the .president, seconded by Mrs. Rockcll, it was resolved that the Brownie certificate be framed.

It was decided that the executive meet in the Borough Council chambers on the second Tuesday in each month at 7.30 p.m. A vote of thanks to the secretary concluded the meeting.
