FIREBLIGHT OUTBREAK

PRESENCE IN MANAWATU,

Fireblight has reached the Manawatu, several affected trees being found within the borough of Palmerston North. Those have been destroyed to prevent the spread. Orehardtsts are endeavouring to have the area brought under the Fircblight Act, which gives power to remove hawthorn, which acts as a nost for the disease. Although known in America for the last 100 years, fircblight only reached New Zealand in December, 1019. The first outbreak was in the Auckland district.
