CORRESPONDENCE

THE BOROUGH COUNCIL.

(To the Editor.) Sir, —I thank you very much for giving space to my last letter, and hope that you will again find space for a few more remarks. In your report of the council’s proceedings in Wednesday’s issue, I see that one of the councillors asked the Mayor if he did not think it would be advisable to give an explanation of the loan position. The Mayor’s reply, which seemed to bo given very grudgingly, reminds us that he made a full statement on his return from Wellington about two months ago. Surely he gives us credit for a little commonsense. We all know he did, and his re- L port'-was mot, ! to say. the least of it, of p. satisfactory nature. What we wanted to know was what *the council had/done in the meantime. To judge by the remarks passed at the council meeting, and the recommendation that the and road loans be placed on the market proves to me that they had done nothing, and my little gentle reminder has evidently awakened them up. to the fact that the ratepayers had given them a duty to perform. I would like, sir, to thank you for the splendid way in which you have handled the borough affairs in your columns, and I am*, sure the majority of the ratepayers will echo my sentiments Avith one accord. It is about time the council took a look at themselves in the glass through which the ratepayers see their idiotic As you say, fancy a council meeting in committee and then meeting again to recommend itself to adopt recommendations Which have long before been attended to. Fancy the council recommending that the offices be closed for the Christmas holidays’ at ,a meeting held on January 11. To quote a councillor’s remarks - . over •- another matter it seems to me that it was. ‘ ‘ Hobson’s choice ’ ’ whether they adopt the’recommendations or not. T.do sincerely hope they will stop this foolish method of conducting the ratepayers' business, and become practical •in the future. What would the shareholders of a dairy company think if their directors acted as this council does?—Again thanking you for your valuable space, I am, etc., RATEPAYER.
