KAKARAMEA

KAKARAMEA SPORTS A SUCCESSFUL GATHERING The annual sports meeting of the Kakaramea Agricultural and Sports Association was held on Wednesday in glorious weather, and proved a brilliant success. The arrangements were carried through without a hitch of any kind, and reflected the greatest credit on the odicials, particularly the secrelary, Mr Frank McKenna, who proved himself the right man in the right place. The catering was in the hands of Mr 11. L. Thomas, and was much appreciated by the visitors.

The Elthani P'po Bund was in attendance, and greatly enlivened the proceedings throughout the afternoon A feature of the day's sport was the wonderful jumping of Mr Alex. Mercer ’a h orse, ‘' Gilgai, ’ ’ which, besides winning the Open Leaping Competition, accounted for the wire jump.ng and the ladies competitions. In the open and wire jumping, “Gilgai” wa.< ably ridden by Mr Sid. Mcßae, who gave a fine exhibition of horsemanship. In the ladies’ competition, “Gilgai” was ridden by Miss B. Gibson, who rode all the six horses that competed —a feat probably without parallel in the history of sports in the Dominion. Very pluckily, too, when the second and third horses tied for second' place, Miss Gibson insisted in riding both over the jumps again, to decide the matter. Needless to say, Miss Gibson’s feat was loudly applauded. In the evening the usual dance was held, the Hall being crowded to its utmost capacity. Messrs W. Kcrrisk and C. Lord acted as M.C. ’s, the music being in the capable hands of “The Serenaders. ”

During the evening, the trophies won during the day were presented by the president, Mr F. S. Tarrant, who specially thanked Miss B. Gibson for the pluck and sporting spirit shown by her in coming forward and riding the whole of the six horses competing in the Ladies’ Jumping Competition. Mr Alex. Mercer received a great ovation as he left the platform with an armful of cups, including the 20-guinea challenge cup, all won by his horse, ‘ ‘ Gilgai. ’ ’ That the dance was a complete success is shown by the fact that no less than £l9/17/- was taken at the door.
