PATEA DISTRICT SCHOOLS A.A.A.

ANNUAL meeting The annual meeting- of the T'atea and .District Public Schools’ Amateur Athletic Association was held in the Borough Council Chambers on • Monday night, Mr C. ii. Honoylieid presiding over a fair attendance. The minutes of the previous annual meeting were read and confirmed. Apologies for non-attendance were received from Miss Ciieync, Messrs H. Sutherland, P. Palmer, G. Laiug, J. A. McKenna and Prank McKenna. The annual balance-sheet, showing a credit balance of £4 U/il, was read. The chair,man, in moving the adoption of the balance-shod, said ho haa to report that the first musical and elocutionary competition had been held last October, and was a pronounced success. The sports had also been held, the championship being won by the VVheuuakura School, Whcnuakura winning the musical and elocutionary cup. The second musical and elocutionary competitions had been held last month, when the Convent School were successful in winning the championship. The football tournament had not yet been hold, chielly owing to the prevalence of inlluenza. However, it was hoped to hold it shortly. More members were needed. The subscription was only 5/-, and if IUU members were obtained the association could carry on very nicely. The association extended from Mokoia to VVaitotara, a very large area. He sincerely hoped the membership .would be increased during the year. Air Matthews, in seconding the moil on, said there should be no difficulty hi obtaining the requisite number of luemuers', when the size of the district was taken into consideration. With regard to the elocutionary and musical competitions, ho thought it would be advisable to limit the number of competitors, when one hall only need be used. The resolution was then put and carried. The election of dliicers resulted as follows: Patron, Mr W. A. Collins (chairman of the Wanganui Education Board). V i.ce-pre.siaents; Messrs Mat thews, itoiieyfield, Tarrant, Tioltham and Hemingway, yutlierlaud (Alton), C. H. Duutfi combe (Waverley), D. Hurley (, Huney viilc).

General Committee: Messrs Rogers, Crown, (Jioiuanco, Miss (Jheyxie, Taylor (Waitotara), Barber (Hurleyvillc), Barnes (Manutahi), representing ■ the teachers, P. Tong, .Fred McXenna, P. Palmer, Captain Tinney, J. Bourke, !S. Huston and C. Fairwcather. (Secretary and treasurer: Mr C. 0. Whittington. Auditor: Mr J. D. G. Thomson. Mr Honeyiicld said he had held the oliice of president for two years, and he thought the oliice should go round. He would like to sec a local man take the position. Mr Matthews said if Mr Honoyiield would not take the position he would move that Mr Strouts be appointed. (Seconded by Mr C. Pairweather and carried unanimously. Mr Strouts, in thanking the meeting, said he thought they should put on record their appreciation of Mr HonoyiieJd’s work. He had carried out his duties faithfully and well, often at great personal inconvenience. The speaker went on to stress the neer of keeping the association alive, for the sake of the town, as it tended to cement the good feeling that should exist between town • and country residents, the association would also be the foundation of an Amateur Athletic Club for the town. 'The time was ripe for the formation of such a club, and he hoped this would be brought about in the near future. With regard to membership, he would like those present to do their utmost to obtain new members and induce people to take an interest in the association. (Applause.) The chairman, in accordance with notice of m (fun, moved that clause 5 of the constitution bo altered, with a view to the year closing on June 30 instead of July 31, the object being that the yearly tickets admit persons to the elocutionary competitions during the year that the ticket was taken out. Mr Hemingway moved that it be a recommendation to the executive to so arrange the programme of the next elocutionary and musical competitions as to allow of one house only being used. Seconded by Mr Holtham. Mr fiogers said, under the old system it was not possible to hear both the elocutionary and musical competitors. Under a new scheme it might be possible to draw up a now programme that would solve the difficulty. It was also decided that the president, secretary and Mr Hemingway be a committee to draw up a circular for the purpose of increasing the membership. It was also decided that Captain Tinney be asked to assist the association at the gate at the forthcoming seven-a-side tournament. It was suggested that the tournament be held on the loth prox. It was also unanimously resolved that the association place on record its warm appreciation of the work of the retiring president, Mr 0. 11. Honoyiield. Mr Honeyiicld, in returning thanks, said he appreciated the resolution very much, indeed. He had tried to do what he could for the association. What success had attended his efforts was duo to the splendid executive and to the secrettirics. (Applause.) Mr Whittington said he would like to express his appreciation of the assistance rendered him by Mr MacMahon, Air Matthews and the staff of the school. Be tore the meeting terminated, Mr

Tong be a committee to arrange details in connection with the* seveu-a-side tournament. Messrs Whittington and Matthews were appointed a committee to arrange details in connection with the basketball tournament. * The chairman said Mrs Gardner would have a soft drinks and light refreshment booth on tho ground for tho benelit of the children. Hot w r ater would be provided free. It was decided that the Football Committee draw up a set of rules for tho tournament, to be placed in a conspicuous place on tho ground. Various other details wore consid ered, and the meeting adjourned.
