j*he fact that the train services of iiio Dominion are being curtailed owing to a shortage of coal must appear passing strange to persons using the railway just now, for nearly every train carries a long string of irucks i .aded with coal, while trucks similarly loaded are to be seen al every station. The ways of the Department si em to many to pass all uiuiersiaadiiig. A sample of coal from Tahora may bo seen at the Tarauaki Herald's office. .It was takcii from a seam about IX iachc; thick oni cropping on private property about eight chains from the
railway. It was knocked off. the outcrop ami naturally is weathered •.-•oaiewhat. The quality, however, is such as to give promise of really excellent coal deeper into the seam. In the summer tie e it. would he a simple matter to get motor trucks right up to the face of ihe coal to be loaded. And our ''Xonp'lssinnus" Government has to curtail the railway services on account of the lack of coal !
A Masterion resident witnessed a pathetic scene, with an intensely humorous ending, at AVelliugtou last week (states Ihe " Wairarapa Age"). A voung lady, with her mother, had ..-me to the city to welcome home the
soldier boy to whom she had been betrothed four years ago. To her amazement she saw him descending the gangway of the transport svith a child in his arms, followed by a smiling woman. The young laly swooned, and fell into the arms of her mother. The soldier, s. eing- what had happened,, turned to ihe woman behind him, ami exclaimed. •■'There, lake your bloomin' kid and let me go to the assistance of my liancoe!" The latter soon recovered. K:\plnnalinns showed that the soldier was merely assisting the bride of a comrade, who was looking after his kit. K.erything ended happily.
