PATEA SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
ORDINARY MEETING. The ordinary monthly meeting of the Patca School Committee was held in the Technical School on Monday night, Mr. E. F. Hemingway presiding. Messrs Watson, Armour, Corbett, Johnfen, Moore and Ilird were also present. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed.
Th( Headmaster's report was road as follows
"I am pleased to be able to say that Miss C. Lavery,\irst-assistant, is quite recovered and has returned to duty. Mrs. Ilird is again on the staff for a fortnight to fill the place of Miss Lehndorf, absent on sick leave. The repairs at the school still await attention. So far Mr. Hodge, the Board's foreman, has not been along. The organised lunch is proving a success, judging by its popularity about 100 pupils take advantage of it daily. We arc inclined to think they arc much belter in health because of the hot drink in the middle of tho day
I would suggest that we appoint'a day in July to be observed as Arbor Day, in order to make a beginning with the scheme of improvement we have adopted." It v.-as unanimously resolved that Arbor Day be held on the second Wednesday in July, and that the proposed lrive to the school be pegged out and nlantcd on that day.
Mr. Armour reported on behalf of the Visiting Committee that various repairs still needed carrying out and ■hat the school terrace needed attention. The Chairman pointed out that owing to the iirci at Queen's Park school, Wangamii, and at the Fox ton school, the Education Board's foreman had his hands full at the present time. No less than £17,000 worth of new buildings were being erected. But for the unforeseen extra work that was beingcarried out the repairs at several schools had to be held over until the rush of work was passed. The Chairman also stated he was pleased to be able to report that the contract for connecting the Headmaster's house with, the Borough water and drainage systems had been signed that day. Three tenders had been received for plastering at the school, but as these were, above the estimate they had been left for the Board to deal with at the meeting on the 18th inst.
It was unanimously resolved to have the terrace attended to without delay. The Headmaster brought forward (he question of a war memorial in addition to the Kobbic Memorial Steps at the school.
It was suggested that the memorial take the place of forming the drive from Egmont Street to the school as suggested by Mr. Grant, Agricultural Instructor.
It was unanimously resolved that an appeal be made to past and present scholars of the school and the general public for subscriptions towards the school memorial in the shape of the Robbie Memorial Steps and the proposed drive. The drafting of the appeal to be in the hands of Mr. Johnson and the Chairman.
Messrs Watson and Shield were appointed a Visiting Committee for the month.
Accounts totalling £4/2/(5 were read and passed for payment, and the meeting adjourned.
