WAYERLEY LADIES’ PATRIOTIC LEAGUE.

the secretary honoured On Friday afternoon a large number of ladies from the Patriotic League and their friends gathered at the Waverley Town Hall for a social afternoon as a fitting wind-up to the many meetings that have taken place during the past four years of war. A bountiful tea was dispensed by the ladies, and songs rendered. Competitions were engaged in, and a very pleasant time was spent. During the afternoon Mrs Hands said she had a pleasing duty to perform. They had gathered to mark a happy stage in the history of the Society. It was some four years since they organised for war work, and the ladies had done all they could on this side of the world to supply the soldiers with the necessary

comforts. They were present today to recognise the splendid work of their secretary, Miss Cheyne. (Applause.) The Committee had decided not to disband but to wait until some other work presented itself. Mrs Hands then handed Miss Cheyne a very handsome handbag containg over £SO, which she asked her to accept on behalf of all present, as a small token of appreciation of the very able and willing manner in which she had carried out the duties of secretary of the Society. (Applause.) The bag had a silver plate with the words “ Presented to Miss I. Cheyne by the Ladies’ Patriotic League, Waverley, 14-3-19” engraved on it. Miss Cheyne, who was completely taken by surprise, suitably replied, thanking all for the handsome present and expressing pleasure that the war was now ended and their work no longer necessary.
