PATEA v WAVERLEY
A most enjoyable and exciting game between the Patea and Waverley teams was played on the Patea Domain on Saturday, resulting in a win for the visitors by five runs. Patea, who batted first, opened with Hamel and Cunningham both playing the bowling with confidence, 24 being registered on the scoring board before the partnership was severed. Harding opened well but succumbed to a rising ball from Partridge which went into slip’s hands. Hemingway played steadily, and at one time the score stood at 40 with only two wickets down, but the bowling was exceptionally good, and the innings closed for 71. Waverley opened with Cave and Bradmore, Bradmore being out l.b.w. with the score at 3. Other wickets fell rapidly until eight were down for 36 runs, and it looked like Patea’s match. Beere, however, hit freely and assisted Cave, who was well set, to add to the score, which was 61 when the next wicket tell. Sneddon came in with five runs to equal and six to win, and playing carefully eventually made the winning hit; Cave being bowled by Tinney just on time for a carefully compiled 41.
