WAVERLEY TOWN BOARD

Ordinary Meeting

The adjourned ordinary meeting of the Waverley Town Board was held in the Boar; I’a mom last night, Messrs R. P Palmer (chair), S J. Price, J.Linklater, R MacDonald and I. Bason being present. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed.

The Clerk reported credit balances as follows:—General account £l4l 4s 3d; W ater and Lighting, £479 19s 7d ; Separata account, £24 3s Id. Accounts amounting to £l9 10s 7d were passed for payment on general account, and on water and lighting account one account amounting to £2 8s 21. It was resolved that Mr Liuklat a r have charge of the surfaceman for the month. A claim from F.aScott was made for wages amounting to £4 10s. It was resolved that P Scott be paid 10s for one day’s work., A let!er was read from the Secretary to the Treasury asking the Board how much money was wantsd and when it would be required.—Held over, Messrs Turnbull and Jones wrote with reference to the report given by Mr Climie regarding various, matters in connection with their contract. Received.

A draft of the license for using water to generate electricity was received.— This was also held over for the present.

A letter was read from Messrs Turnbull end Jones with reference to the i delay in going on with their contract and notifying the Board that they will claim interest on the unpaid progress payment. -*-Held over. A further communication was also read from Messrs Turnbull' and Jones claiming the sum of £705 10s as a progress payment It was decided to hold this over for the present. Messrs Robinson and Christopher, C.E., - wrote offering their services in connection with the mishap at the Mill Ham.

It was decided to reply that the Board cannot do anything at present.

A letter from the Town Clerk for the Raglan Town Board eskiug the Board to support their remit at tbe Municipal Conference. It was decided to ask Mr G V Pearco M.P. to act as the Board’s delegate at the Conference and to support the Raglan Town Board’s remit.

A letter was received from the Town Clerk. Kaponga asking., where tbe Board had obtained their loan as they wanted to raise a £SOOO loan.

& The Clerk states he hsd replied giving them the information required. A letter was received from Mr Climio with reference to seeing tbe work through in connection with the water and lighting scheme. Ho offered to carry out all work necessary at a charge to be agreed upon.

The Board then went into committee and on resuming there was no repor: tabled.

The same members then sat as the "Waverley Domain Board. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed.

The Clerk, reported that tbe credit balance was £lO6 10s 6d. * Accounts amounting to £3B 2s 6d were passed for payment. Mr Pi ice mentioned that it was thought best to adopt Mr McGorrery’s suggestion to raise the croquet Uwn at the far eud and instiuct ons had been given for tbe work to be carried out accordingly. It was reported that Mr Rutherford had undertaken to cut the trees that are to be removed for the wood and leave everything in a satisfactory state.

WAIROA DOMAIN BOARD.

The Wairoa Domain . Board then met.

The Clerk reported that the balance was £8 os 6d. There being no business to bring forward the Board adjournedi

BALL AT N6UTUWERA.

“ The most successful ever held,” was the verdict on the Ball tendered to the Manager (Mr Lonsdale) and staff of the Moumahaki Experiment*! farm on Wednesdav night. Never in the history of the ball have so raanv al tended a similar function,, well over 200 being present It must be most gratifying to Mr and Mrs W. J. Johnston, who have been the prime movers in arranging the details of the ball lo seo their efforts crowned with such success.

Shortly after 8 o’clock the music struck up and Mr and Mrs J Laird led off in the grand march, followed by 75 couples. The supper room and the Hall were beautifully decorated with flogs, ferns and evergreens. The tables were simply loaded with trifles, fruit salads: jellies and cakes of every description, tbe former being supplied by the ladies of the district and the latter by Messrs Duston and Co of Wanganui, everything being on a moot lavish scale.

The ladies assisting with the supper wore Mrs W J Johnston, Mrs S Johnston, H Fonthcombe. Buckingham, Misses Daisy Barclay, Healy. James, Bartlett and Robertson. A number of gentlemen also assisted and supplied the many wants of the guests in record time.

During supper extras were played by the Misses Salter, Hartwell, Carey Miller, Kennedy and Mr J Wooding. Mefsrr J Lv’rd and G Aiken acted in the capic'tv of M’s C. The music for the Ball was supplied by Miss 0 Dickie (paino) and H Nicholls (violin). After supper Mr Lonsdale said he would like to say a few words as it would not be fitting to leave without expressing liis appreciation of wbat had bem done by Mr, and Mrs Johnston and of the great gathering there that night to do honour to himself and staff'. He wished to thank them nil on behalf of M's Lonsdale, himse'f and staff. The ladies hid gone to a gre-it deal of trouble in decorating tlm building ini pnvi-ling h bi untious supper. Ho hoped that they would meet again in the hall many fines as they were in b district where good fellowship dwells. He again thanked them all for their great kindness. (Applause).

Robinson and his companions embark on the ship 1 They are attacked by cannibals who are repulsed, but in the fight Friday is killed by an arrow and is buried at sea. On the long voyage back to Crusoe’s mother land bis acquaintance with the Captain’s daughter ripens into love. Robinson Crusoe and his wife live to a ripe old ago and he never tires of the circle of children who surround him clamouring for a recital of hia stirring adventures
