WASHED OVERBOARD.

SAD OCCURRENCE ON THE AUSTRALIAN COAST, Sydney, Sept, 27. While the hulk Gem, with a cargo of coal for the E.M.S. Mariposa, was berng towed from Newcastle, she encountered a heavy gale, and foundered oft Broken Bay, 20 miles north of Sydney Heads. Larsen, the hulk-keeper, with his wife and four young children, and Holmes, a deck band, were on board before the vessel sank, tne sea washed Larsen and Holmes overboard before the eyes of Mrs Larsen.

Though the night was very dark, Mrs Larsen succeeded in signalling the tug that the Gem was about to sink, and the remainder of those on board were rescue! before the vessel foundered.
