PATEA SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

The above committee held its usual monthly meeting in the Borough Council Chambers on Monday, when there were present—Messrs R. A Adams (chair), W. Biown, Gilligan, Gower, T. E. Hamerton, Hogan and Rev C. 0. Harper. Minutes of former meeting read and confirmed.

Correspondence was restricted to one memo from the headteacher.

Mr T. E. Haraerton then reported that, on behalf of Mr J. A. McKenna, the secretary of the Druids’ Entertainment Committee, he had to report the following result of the entertainment organised by the Druids in aid of v thc school funds:—

Mr McKenna, therefore, had the pleasure to hand in to the committee the sum of £lO 9s Od as the net result of the enter tainment, which he hoped would prove acceptable to the members of the School Committee

The report was received and adopted with acclamation, and the Rev Harper moved, and Mr Brown seconded, “ That a hearty vote of thanks bo accorded to the Druids for their gift to the School Committee of the proceeds of the late entertainment, and to Messrs McKenna and T. jdl. Hamerton for their efforts in making the entertainment a success.” —Carried unanimously. The headteacher's monthly report was then read, reporting the average weekly attendances since last meeting to bo 174, 185, 179. 153 and 181 respectively, and ills ) giving a list of parents whose children had become subject to penalty under the compulsory clauses of the Education Act, and asking the committee to take steps to prevent a continuance of the evil. Mr Gower moved, and Mr Brown seconded, “That the headteacher’s re-

port be adopted, and that notice be sent to the parents named in (ho report that action will be taken against them uuder the compulsory clauses of the Education Act unless the more regular attendance of their children is enforced.”—Carried unanimously.

The statement of accounts showed tho committee to Lave a credit balance of £2 los 3d after allowing for all liabilities to date, and the secretary said that this was such an extraordinary circumstance that he would suggest a donation being made do the school library funds to murk their appreciation of, and sympathy with, the teacher’s efforts in establishing that most useful institution.

' Mr Adams said ho thought they should wait until their term of office was completed, and then vote any money they might have to spare to that purpose. Mr Hamertou said no doubt by that lime the balance would be on the other side of the ledger, and then it would not benefit the library fund very much.

Mr Brown thought the idea u very good one, and although not in any way wedded to a particular amount, he would, to test the feeling, move, “That the sum of £1 be given to the school library fund,” In moving the resolution ha said ho considered the children deserved some such recognition of the services they bad rendered at the entertainment.

Mr Adams said, after hearing MiBrown’s remark he must withdraw all opposition, and would second tho motion, which was then put, and carried unanimously. Accounts were passed for payment, and the meeting then adjourned.
