Statement of accounts read, shewing available balance of £959 17s Id.

On the motion of Mr Major, seconded by Mr Brown, it was resolved, “That Lauartz be paid ten shillings per day wtr’e acting as pilot.'* Accounts amounting to £B3 7s 7d were passed for payment. A deputation, consisting of His Worship the Mayor and Cr Adams, waited on the Board to ask for assistance "n mating the road to the Heads. His Worship intro-* diicing the subject, said he had had au es imate made of the cost, and found that about £B7 would be required to form the road right down to the river, and suggested that the Board should undertake the claying over the sand drift on their reserve. He thought the road would be a great boon to both the town and country people, and would enhance the value of the Board’s property, as well as assist the Borough in improving the approach to a really valuable health resort. Cr Adams didn t know that he eouldadd very much to what His Worship had said, except, perhaps, that by having that portion of the road clayed the Board would stop a large area of drifting sand, and he thought, apart from that, the Board should assist, as it was quite as much for the benefit of the couutiy people as to the town. The Borough Council had placed £SO on the estimates for this year for expenditure on that road, and he hoped the Board would assist them.

His Worship said he should also add that if the borough succeeded in getting this road made it was their intention to fence off sixteen feet of the centre for traffic, and plant the rest on both sides with trees and shrubs, sand grass, etc., so as to make a pleasant walk or drive, Mr Major (Harbour Board) thought it was a very laudable desire on the part of the Patea people, in which they deserved every assistance, and he would move that the Board subsidise the borough to the extent of ten shillings in the £. up to £BO for the purpose of forming that road.” Consiclaiv.ble conversational discusssion took pla?a or the question, and eventually Mr I'l'i. o;’s motion was altered to read as f o c ws:—“ That this Board con*« tribute L 27 U ; towards the cost of the Heads re ~ p-ov’ded the borough spends £BO on tc e . 3 : oad this year, the sum of £27 IQs tofc ai put of the £80.” This was carried ix in'mously, and the Board adjourned.
