A CONFESSION.
Auckland, May 13. Last night a man named Samuel Evison, a carpenter, gave himself, up to Constable Forbes, of Hamilton, and confessed to having caused the death by drowning of a woman whom he pushed into the river Trent, at Nottingham, in March, 1882. The constable got bis statement taken before a J.P. Evison appeared perfectly sane. He stated he kne .. the woman only by the name of Jenny, and was acquainted with her only three weeks. Her resiieace is unknown. She was employed as a clipper scolloper in the lace trade. He states she was 20 years of ago, dark complexion, with hazel eyes. At the time of the occurrence he was em- ! ployed by Belt and Sons, contractors and builders, Sher.vood street, and boarded with another carpenter in Waterways.rcet, Nottingham. Herbert Johnson Evison states that his sister and mother reside in Retford. Nottingham. Constable Forbes brings Evison to Auckland tomorrow.
