PRACTIOAL CHRISTIANITY. Published fob the Special Hefefit of Non-Churoiigoebs. Christic.n Religion, intellik- gently understood, oomos not to add to men’s burdens, bat to remove diem. “ For God sent not Hio Son into the world!||to condemn the world, bat that the world through Him might be saved.” John iii. 17 Its leading doctrines, adapted to the rse of this New Age, are summarised as follows: ■ There is one God, in whom is a Divine Trinity of Love, Wisdom and Operation, and He is the Lord Jesns Christ. Saving Faith is to believe in Him, 3". vils are to be shunned, because they are of the devil and from the devil. Good Works ought to ho done, because they are of God and from God, and they ought If 1 done by man os of himself, but with the belief that they are from the Lord, opera
ting in him by him. There are two things which con stitnle the essence of God—love ami wisdom. And there are three which cons'itate the esence of His love—to love others out of Himself; to desire to he one with them; ami to make (hem happy from Himself. The same three constitute the essence ot His wisdom; because love ami wisdom in God make one, and lc v e Its these things, and wisdom -.cconipiishes them. (Tree Christian Religion, No 43,} The'.Word of God is Divine troth clothed in hmnnn language, ami adapted to tiic varied states of the human heart, that thus a man may know God, and learn to know and d-' His will. “If ye continue in My word, then arc ye My disciples indeed.’'* John vui. 31. “ Therefore oil tilings whatsoever ye wovld that men should do unto ye, do ye even so unto them; for this is the law and the prophets.” Matt vii.B. The Ten Commandments point out what evils are to he shunned in order that, men may attain eternal life. “ That it is not so difficult to live the life of heaven as is commonly believed is evident from this —that when any thing picscnts itself that one knows to to insincere and unjust, to which his mind is disposed, he need not only think that it ought not to be done because it is contrary to the Divine commands. If a man accustoms himself so to think, and from custom derives the habit, lie is then by degrees conjoined to heaveu ; and in so far as he is conjoined to heaven, the higher decrees of his mind are opened ; and in so far as these are opened he sees what is insinccie and unjust; and in so iai as he sees these evils they can be shaken off, tor it is impossible that any evil can he shaken off until it be seen, ibis is a stale in*o which a man may enter from freedom ; (or who is not capable from freedom of thinking in this manner ? Hut when he has made a beginning all goods are wrought in him by the Lord, and He. causes him not only to see evils, but also not to wi and finally to become averse tos them. This is meant by the Lord’ words, “My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”' Matt. xi,3o. But it should he known that the difficulty of so thinking, and likewise of resisting evils, increase in proportion as a man from ■‘‘he will commits evils; for in so (?ir ho becomes accustomed to (hem, until at length he docs not see them, and afterwards them, and from the delight of love excuses them, and by all kinds of fallacies confirms them, and declares that they are allowable and g,;od, But this occurs with those who in the age of adolescence plunge into evils us if without restraint, and at the same lime reject Divine things from the heart.”— ( ll Heaven and Hell.” No 583. t
