INTERPROYINCIAL. (PER press association.) CHRISTCHURCH, June 4. J. J. Mumford, who was accidentally shot while out rabbit shooting, died at the hospital yesterday. A little boy named Brooker Stalbans was bitten by a dog a few days ago, and died from its effects yesterday. DUNEDIN, June 4. A night alarm, to teat the celerity with which the volunteers would turn out in a sudden emergency, came off at 10.30. The signal was the firing of two guns and ringing of the city and suburban firebells. Within a few minutes there was a large muster at the Garrison Hall. The Fort Chalmers men were brought to town in a special train, and there was an immense turn out of people. 804 volunteers paraded, not very far short of the full strength. In the country districts 219 volunteers turned out at their respective stations. HAWERA, June 4. Major Atkinson met about 20 settlers at Rahotu yesterday, re native affairs. There ■ was merely a repetition of the general statement made before which went to show that settlers were subjected to petty annoyances, but no one anticipated anything in the nature of an outbreak. Major Atkinson said settlers in native districts unfortunately must expect a little annoyance, but he sympathised deeply with the settlers, and strongly condemned the removal of the Constabulary as tending to intensify the delusions of the natives that the land was coming back to them. He would do what he could to get better police protection in the district.
