BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The Borough Council held its usual monthly meeting on Monday, when there were present—His Worship the Mayor (presiding), Crs Aitchison, Beamish, Currie and McKenna. The three latter were the newly elected members, and signed the statutory declaration prior to taking their seats. The minutes of the former regular meeting, and two special meetings were read and confirmed. Correspond! nee inwards and outwards was then read and laid on the table. His Worship proposed, and Cr Aitchison, seconded, and it was carried, That the amount due to Mr Hutchison re Wood’s claim be paid. With regard to the application from Captain Taplin, for the use of that portion of the Immigration Barracks, known as the drill-hall, with the office adjoining, Ur. Aitchison moved, That Captain Taplin be informed that this Council will grant the application contained in his letter of the 21st May until such time as the Council may require the rooms for other purposes, the Council also reserving the right to the large room for special occasions, due notice of which will be given to Captain Taplin or other officer in command.

Cr Aitchison, in moving the resolution, said that he thought the council might grant the application and give the volunteers the absolute use 'of the small room, and the use of the large room, except on any special occasions, when it might possibly be wanted for other purposes. He did not think the volunteers could object to this arrangement, as the council might grant the rooms free and allow them absolute control of the small room. This was seconded by Cr Beamish and carried.

The application of the Fire Brigade for permission to erect the fire bell on the borough reserve near the engine shed was not granted, but it was decided to grant permission to erect it on the piece of vacant ground opposite the Central Hotel.

With reference to the pet ton re fencing on Section No 40, a legal opinion was received to the effect that under present circumstances the borough hasnopo.ver to interfere with it. The Town Clerk was instructed to forward a reply to the petitioners in accordance with the opinion received. Report of the W-tlcs Committee was received.

The report of Mr Hassell re the Patea Bridge was read and received, and after discussion it was resolved, That His Worship the Mayor and Cr Aitchison be a committee to wait on the County Council in regard to the report.

Accounts amounting to £solls 5d were passed for payment, and the Council adjourned.
