RAILWAY TIME-TABLE.
The public meeting convened by His Worship the Mayor for Friday evening last to receive the report of the deputation appointed to wait on the District Manager of Railways relative to the proposed new time-table, was but very poorly attended, ten persons being present. His Worship was voted to the chair, and on opening proceedings said be thought it was necessary to explain why he had not called the meeting earlier. The reason was that the result of the deputation wailing on Mr Rothernm was at first nil, as that gentleman told the deputation that until he had consulted the general manager he could give no decided answer at nil. He (Mr A.) must say that when the. deputation met Mr Rothernm, Mr Horner had taken very great interest in the matter, and could not have done more if he had been a tradesman in the town. The deputation pointed out that the proposed time-table would he worse for this town than the present one. The District Manager said they weie quite aware of this, and had been compelled to make it useless for passengers from the south, as they could only stay twenty minutes here. They had seen the injustice of this, and had spent many hours in trying to figure out a better time-table, but had been unable to compile a belter one. The District Manager also said be would endeavour to have a special train one day a week to run from Wanganui to hero and back, which would enable people who wanted,to come up on that day and return after some hours stay here, but he could not promise this until ho bad interviewed the General Manager. This be had ‘done, and had sent the following telegram on Tuesday last: “ Extra special train approved of. Expect to open line cn March 23rd.” As he (Mr A.) understood it, the special train would not necessarily be on Saturday, but would be run to suit any particular day which might be ma to a market day. Mr Gibson thought that one train a week was a very poor return for making the line useless to this town, and thought that the intermediate traffic was being ruined for the sake of the through trains, and considered this a very great mistake, and aflei a short discussion moved, and Mr H. E. Deane seconded the following resolution :—“ That in the opinion of this meeting the local traffic between Hawera and Waitotara suffers under the present and proposed timetables for the convenience of the through train from New Plymouth to Foxton and would urge a re-consideration of the table to give greater facility for the local traffic,” which was carried. Mr E. Lc G, Jacob proposed and Mr W. Brown seconded a resolution thanking Mr Rolheram for the courtesy and kindness shewn to the deputation, and a vote of thanks to the chair closed the proceedings.
