WAR IN THE SOUDAN.
Crbutbb— copyright. J A Hero’s Last Words. LONDON, Feb. 23. The despatches received by the Government from General Gordon at Khartoum have been published. The last is dated December the 14th, and shows that Khartoum was then reduced to the last extremity, fighting going on day and night,: the city being beseiged by the rebels on three sides. General Gordon concluded his letter with these words—“Como quickly.” His despatches, dated November the 4th, received 14th idem, said he could hold out for forty days, but afterwards there would be difficulty. He added that there were five steamers at Metemneh waiting Lord Wolseley’s orders, SYDNEY, Feb 24. The Patriotic Fund now amounts to £30,000. Objections have been urged as to the legality of the action of the Government' in despatching the New_ South Wales troops to the Soudan, and a petition to the Governor against the expedition is being prepared.' WELLINGTON, Feb 23. Captain Edwin suggests starting a Patriotic Fund in New Zealand to help the sister colony in sending her troops to the Soudan, and has forwarded a donation as a nucleus to the,fund.
